During his career at AbbVie, Schumacher was instrumental in redefining the company’s relationship with its outside legal counsel, including the law firm’s diversity objectives. In August, she was awarded by the American Bar Association for her efforts to enhance diversity at AbbVie and in the legal profession. Schumacher did not react quickly to a request for comment regarding her retirement intentions. Sites did not respond to a comment request either.

Gonzalez referred to Siatis as “the best candidate to continue Laura’s success.” Sites, according to Gonzalez, has held a number of important positions in the legal department of AbbVie, including the leadership of its ethics and compliance programs and strategic initiatives such as mergers, litigation, licensing, and intellectual property.

Schumacher began her career at what is now ArentFox Schiff, where she has spent over two decades working for Abbott. In 2005, she was appointed general counsel, supervising around 500 workers. After Abbott’s separation, Schumacher became AbbVie’s general counsel.

AbbVie appointed her to the position of vice president of external affairs and chief legal officer in 2018. Two years later, the business concluded a $63 billion merger with Botox manufacturer Allergan PLC, with Schumacher maintaining both posts. In July, Allergan reached a $2 billion settlement with AbbVie regarding its marketing of opioids.
