Alexander received the 1969 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her portrayal in The Great White Hope on Broadway. Her cinematic debut was the 1970 romantic drama “White Hope,” for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Her subsequent nominations for the Academy Award were for her parts in All Presidents’ Men (1976), Kramer & Kramer (1979), and Wills (1990). (1983).
She received her first Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt in “Eleanor and Franklin” in 1976, a role she had to play between the ages of 18 and 60.

She was awarded two Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture for her performances in “The Fight for Time” (1980) and “Warm Springs” (2005).
